The History of the Name Tag

Name badges started way back in Roman time for registering pets, and the term dog tag was born. They then moved the practice over to the military.

After the fall of the Roman Empire this practice disappeared for almost 1,500 years. Not for dogs, just for people.

During the American Civil War, soldiers were concerned that their bodies would not be identified in the aftermath of a battle because neither the Union nor Confederate government issued identification tags.

Consequently, many soldiers would write their name on a piece of paper and pin it to their clothing or scratch their name into the soft lead of their belt buckle.

So after a millenia of not caring, we decide that loved ones should know if soldiers are dead or just ran off with another woman and disappeared.

Name tags appear. Sure thet were only worn by Air Force pilots, and cadets, but they’re Top Gun so they’re better than everyone else.

Those who were wanted there own literally wrote their name on a piece of cloth and pinned, or sew, it to their chest.

Name tags became a world wide phenomenon!

Science brought us the miracle of adhesive backing, and C-Line Products brought is the Hello My Name Is badge in 1959.

Before that people at trade shows sat in the lobby individually sewing their name tags to their shirts before entering. It was a whole new world.

We believe in labeling people in the most detailed way possible. Name badges are not only about identifying an individual, but their personality and traits.

Richard Head needs to know that his parent love him even though they gave him an awful name. Maybe there’s a very loving story behind it, like his mom’s parent thought his dad was a dick and died before Richard was born, and this was their way of remembering them.

See what a name badge can do!
